Trivia Team Names: Clean, Clever Ideas for Every Crowd
By the 321Trivia Team ·
A good trivia team name is short, easy for the host to read aloud, funny on first hearing and clean enough for any room. Puns on “quiz”, “fact” and “answer” are the classic route, but names that poke fun at your own team’s chances often get the bigger laugh.
Below are original team names grouped by theme, all of them family-friendly, followed by tips for choosing one that will still feel right in week ten.

Names to Avoid
Some names cause more trouble than they are worth, even when nobody means any harm:
- Innuendo. It might get a laugh from your table, but the host has to read it out to a room that may include children, coworkers or the venue’s owner.
- Names aimed at people. Jokes about another team, the host, a group of people or a named public figure can turn a friendly night sour fast.
- Confusable names. A name that looks like the host’s, another regular team’s or the venue’s own branding muddles the leaderboard and the prizes.
- Brand names. Building your name around a company or product rarely adds to the joke, and a pun on quiz words is almost always funnier anyway.
- Hard-to-read spelling. Deliberate misspellings and strings of symbols are unreadable on a TV from across the room.
How to Pick a Great Team Name
- Keep it short. The name has to fit on a leaderboard on the TV and be readable from across the room. Two to four words is the sweet spot. In 321Trivia a name can be up to 40 characters, but shorter reads better.
- Say it out loud first. The host will read it to the whole room. If it is hard to pronounce, depends on spelling to be funny, or sounds rude when spoken, choose again.
- Make the joke land without explanation. Inside jokes amuse your table and nobody else. The best names get a reaction from strangers.
- Keep it clean. Trivia nights draw mixed crowds: families, coworkers, people on a first date. A name that embarrasses the host gets read out once, through gritted teeth, and remembered for the wrong reasons.
- Aim the joke at yourselves. Names that mock another team, a group of people or a real person are the ones that cause trouble. Self-deprecation never does.
- Match the night. On a themed trivia night, a name that fits the theme is a quick way to win the room over, and some hosts give a prize for the best one.
- Keep it for the season. At a weekly night, a consistent name builds a reputation. Regulars and hosts will start to recognize you, and a rivalry is more fun when both sides have a name.
Team Names in Phone-Based Trivia
When you play on 321Trivia, you type your team name as you join, by scanning the QR code on the screen or entering the game code, and it appears on the leaderboard for the rest of the night. By default, team names are kept family-friendly: a name with blocked language is turned away when you join, and you are asked to choose another. The filter checks whole words and common disguises such as spaced-out letters or symbols in place of letters, so an innocent name that happens to contain a rude-looking string of letters is not blocked. Hosts can switch the filter off for their own game.
One practical tip: if your phone drops out and you need to rejoin, use the same phone and the same team name, so you come back as the same team rather than starting over with a score of zero. To find a game to play, see upcoming trivia nights, and if your team keeps winning, the rules are worth a read before someone asks for a recount.
